Target reported that hackers stole about 40 million debit and credit card numbers, names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses while Neiman Marcus stated some 70 million customer names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses were stolen. At least three other well known US retailers were compromised. Most states require companies, usually the credit card issuer, to contact customers when personal data is compromised.
